HBOT may relieve symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), according to new research by investigators at Tel Aviv University’s Sagol School of Neuroscience. Mice with brains having the specific condition that is characteristic of human AD (triple-transgenic model of AD, or 3xTg-AD) that were exposed to HBOT in this study showed reduced behavioral difficulties, and 40 percent reductions in inflammation and plaque. According to professor Shai Efrati, one of the paper’s authors, “In this hallmark study, the beneficial physiological effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy were directly demonstrated on Alzheimer-affected brain tissue.”
HBOT is established as a safe and effective therapy in widespread use worldwide for dozens of conditions including wound healing and brain injury. By dramatically increasing tissue oxygen levels, HBOT significantly reduces inflammation, stimulates the release of growth factors, and increases production of stem cells. It also triggers nerve growth (neurogenesis) and formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). Research and clinical experience strongly support the value of HBOT in healing brain injuries ranging from mild concussion to severe traumatic brain injury. Many of its positive effects are seen in improved cognitive abilities and memory. This research indicates that HBOT may have a significant role to play in treating Alzheimer’s disease and, at the least, improving the quality of life of those who are struggling with this condition.
